Revelation Assurance

Ladies, when a man says he’ll fix something, he will. There’s no need to nag him about it every six months.

OK, well, maybe some promises should be met with a healthy dose of skepticism. But what about God’s promises?

If God says that as a believer, you have everlasting life, do you believe Him or doubt Him?

If you doubt His promise, then what are you basing your assurance on? Broadly speaking: on your performance, or on God’s promises. The Free Grace position, which is the Biblical position, is that assurance is based on God’s faithfulness to His promises. Assurance is a matter of revelation:

“The evidence underlying a positive conviction, or assurance as to personal salvation, is primarily the fact of the faithfulness of God as revealed in His Word” (Lewis Sperry Chafer, Salvation, chap. 8, p. 58).
